Plan:
Arrive @ Kansai Airport, travel to Kyoto, w/ 4 night stay. After that, we may go to Nara for a day trip prior to traveling to Tokyo, either way, we leave on this day to Tokyo for a 7 day stay, potentially just staying around the city, or taking a day trip to mt. Fuji (nothing concrete planned in Tokyo, but we can just decide to stay in the city the whole 7 days to immerse ourselves in the big city). We leave from Narita airport out of the country.

With this plan, my questions:
1. Does a 14 Day JR pass make sense?
2. For in and around Kyoto, what rail pass should I buy:
a. If I have a JR pass, do I need a separate pass? b. If I did not have a JR pass, and just using the local pass? 3. For in and around Tokyo, what rail pass should I use:
a. If I have a JR pass, do I need a separate pass? b. If I did not have a JR pass, and just using the local pass?

Thanks!

Hello there,

1.) Your travel costs are limited, as most travel is locally in the Kansai Area (Kyoto, Osaka, Nara) and your longer travel is limited to a one way to Tokyo. Because of this I would just buy normal tickets.

2.)Within Tokyo you can look at using Suica or day passes for the metro: https://www.tokyometro.jp/en/tips/metro/before.html

Hope this helps,
Daniel
