Hi there!

I would advise a 7 day JR Pass for your travel and use it the first week when you are in Japan. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return tickets Tokyo - Kyoto and you'd make some great savings with the additional travel. Your itinerary looks very ''doable'' btw :)

For travel from Narita Airport - Kyoto, first take the Narita Express to Tokyo station. Here transfer to the Shinkansen to Kyoto, it's a pretty straight forward trip. You can use the JR Pass for local travel around Kyoto on the JR as well such as to Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama, it however can't be used for travel to Karasumaoike etc.

You can also use to pass for local travel around Tokyo on the JR Lines running throughout the city. This includes travel to Disneyland.

For travel to Odaiba please see this website.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel-san!

Thanks for replying! It helps a lot! :D

So I'll activate in Day 1 and the last day of usage is Day 7 ya? Is it till 2359? For Day 7 I'll be travelling to Motherfarm, which means I will take JR train from Shinjuku to Sanukimachi Station. I would like to reach at 9.09am and there are several routes. The price have a range of 1890Yen to 3300Yen. If i were to reserve seat, do i have to pay additional using JR pass?

Based on http://www.hyperdia.com/en/cgi/en/search.html?dep_node=SHINJUKU(JR)&arv_node=SANUKIMACHI&via_node01=&via_node02=&via_node03=&year=2014&month=05&day=23&hour=06&minute=30&search_type=0&search_way=&transtime=undefined&sort=0&max_route=5&airplane=off&ship=off&sprnozomi=off&bus=off&privately=off&lmlimit=null&search_target=route&facility=reserved&sum_target=7 I have no idea if i can take Route 1?

For the Narita Express, do I just show my JR pass? Is there any specific procedure I need to do? During the last day, do I also take Narita Express to Narita from Tokyo Station? Do I buy it from the station?

Hi Again!

Yes you are correct about the JR Pass validity, seat reservations are free with the JR Pass.

For the Narita Express, just go to a ticket office at any JR Station and tell the staff what train you wish to travel all. They will reserve the seat for you and print your ticket. Do note that the Narita Express is by reservations only.

Lastly, yes the route Shinjuku - Sanukimachi is covered by the JR Pass.

Hope this helps too!

Hi Daniel,

Sorry but to confirm again. The reservation of seats will also be free if in hypedia it stated there's additional cost for reservation of seat? Like say fare: ¥1890, seat fee: ¥1400.

Narita express is by reservations only, does this means I have to make advance reservation when I arrive in narita? Or is it exceptional for JR Pass?

Sorry for asking so many questions because it's my first time in Japan! :)

Thank you for your help!

Hi CXT,

Yes seat reservations are FREE of charge with the JR PASS.

It means that you'll have to obtain a seat number before boarding the train. So when you exchange your JR Pass, tell the staff that you wish to take the train to Tokyo and they will give you the tickets at the same time. It's only something small so don't worry about it :)

Enjoy Japan!

Hi Daniel,

For the routes that I'm gonna travel that requires the use of JR Pass, can I always make reservation in advance?

Also, is there anything else I have to note using JR Pass?

Hello :)

Yes you can always make reservations beforehand, however the only trains that strictly needs a reservations is the Narita Express.

There's nothing of note that comes to mind right now but let me know if you have any more questions :)

Hi Daniel,

I'm actually quite confuse about the route from Nara to Osaka (namba station) using JR pass, as well as from namba station back to Kyoto station. Because from what I know there are namba station, JR namba station etc.

Could you pls advise to fully utilize the JR Pass?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Cxt,

Of course I can. Namba station when you travel with the JR is called JR-Namba. The other (Namba) is for the Metro and Kintetsu line.

Here is JR-Namba to Nara

and Here is JR-Namba to Kyoto.

Both are completely covered by the JR Pass!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your help! It really helps! :)

For Osaka, is Namba Station the right place for evening shopping?

Also, based on my itinerary in Kyoto, do you suggest I travel by subway or bus in Day 2?

Hi Again!

Yes Namba is absolutely great for shopping and even better in the evening!

In Kyoto I would use a bus pass, it's only 500 yen and you are covered for the day. Buses in Kyoto are the best way of transport station as they run everywhere.

Enjoy!

Hi Daniel,

Great to hear that! :D

Thanks for the advice!

I have another question with regards to travelling from either Kiyomizudera area/ Gion area to Osaka Namba. I was actually thinking of slotting Osaka in Day 2. Because if I were to break down the time, an hour for golden pavilion, 1hr30mins for cat cafe 2 hours for kiyomizudera temple and another hour for higashiyama area. Is these timing sufficient to visit the area? Will I be too ambitious to add Osaka in Day 2 as well?

Hi Cxt!

Slotting in places to visit within an hourly roster can be a bit dangerous. This because you may not be familiar with local travel and how long it may take the actually get somewhere. I would keep it a little more global, say morning for the east side of Tokyo, lunch in the cat cafe, walk around Higashiyama after and see if you still have time to visit Osaka or have something less time consuming to do in Kyoto.

From Going - Namba Station, take the bus to Kyoto station. From there use the same trains, as linked before between Namba - Kyoto (in reserve order).

Asakusa - Odaiba is a little more complicated as Asakusa is only reachable by metro. First take the Toei Subway Asakusa Line to Shimbashi, from there use the yurikamome to Odaiba.

Does that help?

Thank you Daniel! All info are very useful.

Could you advise me the route from Higashi-shinjuku to Narita Airport T2? I search in Hyperdia and the routes they advise me are cheaper than narita express, hence I'm confuse.

Hi Cxt!

Could you like me the search results which you are getting? I checked the route for you but did not know exactly what you find confusing?

In general, the Narita Express is not the cheapest way to travel. However it covers much more comfort and is faster than other methods of travel to Narita Airport.
