Is it worth to buy a JR pass for Tokyo to Kyoto (round trip) + some daily trips?

Hi!

I'm leaving on September 8th for Tokyo with my husband and our 3 children (8, 11, 14).
We will go from Tokyo to Kyoto upon arrival and back to Tokyo for the last 7 days of our holidays. We plan to make some daily trips to Nara, to the Fuji mount, etc. that should be reachable using the JR Pass.
It's not so clear to us if it is worth buying a 14 days JR pass, since it would cost more than 1300 euros for all of us.
Is the JR pass enough to visit Tokyo? I understand that the only urban line we could use is the Yamanote, but it's hard to understand if it would be enough to visit the city.

Thank you for your attention,

Viviana

Hi Viviana,

Local travel within cities, such as Tokyo generally does not cost much and a JR Pass is better used for longer trips, such as Tokyo - Kyoto.

With your trip in mind, I would advise using a 7 day JR Pass to make the trip Tokyo - Kyoto and back. Then buy normal tickets for local travel in Tokyo. You can buy a pre-paid travel card like Suica to make travel a lot more convenient within Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
