Is a JR pass worth it?

This is my preliminary itinerary for next April.

Day 1-3: Tokyo
Day 4: Tokyo --> Nikko --> Tokyo (Day trip)
Day 5: Tokyo --> Osaka
Day 6-7: Osaka
Day 8: Osaka --> Kyoto
Day 9-11: Kyoto (maybe day trip to Nagoya one day)
Day 12: Kyoto --> Takayama
Day 13-14: Takayama (one day trip to skirakawa)
Day 15: Takayama --> Tokyo
Day 16: Tokyo --> Hakone --> Tokyo (day trip)
Day 17-20: Tokyo

I am thinking to get a 14 day JR pass that starts on Day 4 and ends on Day 18? Is it worth it? Do i need to pay an extra reserve seat fee and reservation fee for the trips between these days?

Or should i get a 21 day JR pass?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

If you use a 14 day JR Pass from day 4, then the last day of use is day 17. That said, I do think a 14 day JR Pass would be the best option for your itinerary. As it covers all your rail travel between the cities you plan to visit and you can make good savings compared to purchasing normal JR tickets.

The JR Pass includes free seat reservations.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Which of these trips do I require to make a seat reservation?
I will also be travelling with a 3 year old, does she get a seat if she is free?
