I think the 7 day pass is best for us?

Hello! My family and I are going to Japan from June 1-15. We'll be traveling from Narita airport straight through to Kyoto. In our 4 nights in Kyoto, we'll also be going to Nara, Osaka and Hiroshima. After that we'll travel to Tokyo Disney, where we'll be staying for 10 nights. After four days of fun at Disney, we'll have 5 or 6 days to travel to Tokyo to enjoy the city.

Would a 7- or 14-day pass make more sense? It seems to me that our longest, most expensive trips are taken within that first seven days. Travel within Kyoto and Tokyo would then likely be supplemented with a pasmo or suica card.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. We are so excited for this trip!

Hi Brandon,

I think that you've already found the answer :) A 7 day JR Pass is also what I would recommend if you can cover your travel to Kyoto and Hiroshima and return to Tokyo before the JR Pass expires.

Travel within Tokyo on the JR Network is also included but does not cost a lot and therefore it is generally better to buy normal tickets for local travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel,

Thank you so much for the response! I'm glad to know I was in the right ballpark. A couple of quick questions. Is there any real advantage to upgrading to first-class? I don't really mind the added cost if the experience is considerably more comfortable, especially since my wife is kind of nervous about traveling in a country where we don't speak the language. (I visited ten years ago and had very little trouble, despite knowing little more than simple phrases.) Might first-class be a more stress-free way to travel from city to city, especially for my nervous wife? I completely understand that this may be a difficult question to answer.

Also, I seem to recall a question about luggage on the Shinkansen. On at least 2 occasions, the four of us will be traveling with at least four full suitcases along with various bags and backpacks. Are these easily accommodated on the train? Again, would first-class make a difference?

Again, thanks for taking the time to answer these questions!

Brandon,

Personally I find travelling in Green Class a lot more of relaxing to explore Japan. There are generally a lot less people travelling in Green Class and those that do want the same quiet and relaxed experience.

Since there are generally less people in the car, it can also be easier to find a spot for your luggage.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
