Hi,

I will be travelling to Hokkaido from 13 to 23 Mar. I planned my itinerary such that I will most likely travel on the following days using JR trains.

that I will use JR train for travelling, I would like to find out which is the most cost effective option.

Day 3:
Kutchan (Niseko) to Hakodate

Day 5:
Hakodate to Lake Toya

Day 6:
Lake Toya to Noboribetsu

Day 7:
Noboribetsu to Otaru;
Otaru to Sapporo

Day 8:
Sapporo to Asahikawa (visit Asahiyama Zoo & sightsee the town near Asahikawa JR station);
Asahikawa to Sapporo

Day 11: Sapporo to New Chitose Airport
(I’m considering taking the bus from Susokino. By taking the train, I need to take the subway to Sapporo station and transit to the Airport Express train.)

For the most cost-effective option, do you recommend the Hokkaido 4-Days Flexible Rail Pass, 7-Days Rail Pass or individual tickets for each train ride?

Thanks and regards,

Hi there,

The trip going down to Hakone and up to Sapporo are pretty long and costly. Using a JR Hokkaido Pass will help you make nice savings here. The same goes for your trip to Asahikawa, especially since you make a return. The JR Pass would help you make savings.

You could either go for a 4 day flexi pass or 7 day JR Hokkaido Pass. The difference between these two options is minimal.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Thanks for your reply.

Based on the above itinerary, I will travel by JR train for 5 days (day 3, 5, 6, 7 and 8).

Will the 4-days Flexible Pass entitle me to take the trains on these 5 days without additional charges for these train rides?

If not, how about the 7-days Rail Pass?

Is the Airport Express train (Sapporo to New Chitose Airport) covered under the 4-days Flexible Rail Pass and 7-days Rail Pass?

Hi there,

The Hokkaido Pass would cover all your travel but if you pick the 4 day flexible option, then pick the 4 days you travel most. Otherwise you could just get a 7 day JR Hokkaido Pass, its a little cheaper than a 7 day Japan Rail Pass and both cover all of Hokkaido.

The train to the airport is also covered.
