Hello I'm trying to plan my itinerary for my first time trip to Japan. I'm a 30 year old graphic designer travelling with a friend. We really want to get a feel of the country and its most important and beautifull places. Also, we really want to economize, since I have found that japan can be very expensive. So we really want to use a 14 day pass at the most. I've been doing some research in the internet and this is what I came out with. Even though we really want to make the most out of this trip, we don't want to be in a hurry jumping from place to place. So at a moderate pace would be fine.

NOV 5 - ARRIVE @ 8PM (Narita Airport) Stay nearby hotel

NOV 6 - TOKYO

NOV 7 - TOKYO > Kamakura > TOKYO

NOV 8 - TOKYO

NOV 9 - TOKYO > Nikko > TOKYO

NOV 10 - TOKYO > KYOTO

NOV 11 - KYOTO

NOV 12 - KYOTO

NOV 13 - KYOTO > HIROSHIMA-Miyajima

NOV 14 - HIROSHIMA-MIYAJIMA > Okayama > KYOTO

NOV 15 - KYOTO

NOV 16 - KYOTO > Nara > KYOTO

NOV 17 - KYOTO > KOYASAN ( staying in a temple? too expensive?)

NOV 18 - KOYASAN > KYOTO

NOV 19 - KIOTO > KANAZAWA

NOV 20- KANAZAWA (bus?) > Shirawago (bus?) > TAKAYAMA

NOV 21 - TAKAYAMA (bus?) > Matsumoto > TOKYO

NOV 22 - TOKYO > Hakone Or 5 lakes Mt Fuji > TOKYO

NOV 23 - LEAVE @ 8PM (NARITA AIRPORT)

I would appreciate some advice on this itinerary. I just want to know what pass to buy and also start making hostel reservations.

Thanks :)

Hi there,

This looks like a great trip. Using the 14 day rail pass from the 9th to the 22nd, and using the [Narita Express + Suica card return deal] for the first few days and return to Narita will give you great savings on your trip.

The general pacing of your trip is really good, but I think I'd replace the trip to Hakone at the end with an overnight stay at Kinosaki onsen while you are in the Kyoto area. This will take the pace off your end of your trip, and also as its the only location your visiting on the Sea of Japan coast will possibly be a different feel to the rest of your trip.

Hope this helps!
