Fukuoka Airport to Tokyo Ibaraki

Hi,
I'm spending 7 days in Japan, arriving Fukuoka end Sep departing Tokyo Ibaraki airport early Oct. Is it better to buy JR pass or segment tickets for our itinerary?

Fukuoka - Hiroshima
Hiroshima - Kyoto
Kyoto - Hakone
Hakone - Tokyo

When I scheduled the itinerary, I hadn't realized Nozumi trains were not accepted on JR Pass, so I'm concerned now I may have been too ambitious with the travel time/distance between destinations!

Thanks.

Hi there!

There's little difference between the Nozomi and other Shinkansen, such as the Hikara/Sakura super express trains that are covered by the JR Pass. The main difference is that they make a couple more stops on the way, the added travel time between Fukuoka and Tokyo in total is less than an hour, so you don't have to worry at all about being too ambitious as the above itinerary would work out fine within 7 days.

Hakata (Fukuoka) - Hiroshima ¥ 8,500
Hiroshima - Kyoto ¥ 10,590
Kyoto - Odawara ¥ 11,550
Odawara - Tokyo ¥ 3,440

For total of ¥ 34,080 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 so you would make ¥ 5,780 in savings. In addition you can take the train whenever you want.

Have a great time in Japan!
Daniel

Hi Daniel
Thanks for your help, we are back from Japan and loved it. The JR pass worked out brilliantly, would highly recommend!
Made our travel life easy, and it was a bonus to be able to use on the JR network in Tokyo, so all up we only bought two additional tickets - the metro in Kyoto and on the 8th day to get to the airport.
