Dear Daniel,

Could you please kindly help?

We are planning to visit Japan with schedule as below:

31Mar Fukuoka - Hiroshima
2Apr Hiroshima - Osaka
4April Osaka - Kyoto
6April Kyoto - Tokyo

Our questions:
- Is a 7days JRPass affordable with the above itinerary please? It was my intension to order a 7days JRPass + Local pass for short trips? Is it sufficient ? - I'm confused which specific JR trains would work for each above routes? - Can we use JPPass for all above routes or may need to purchase another private railways (that may help save time and limit traveling around coz we have a 3yrs kid)
- For day trip from Tokyo - Fuji, kindly advise if we should purchase a day tour with operator or easily go with JRPass?

It would be high appreciated to get your advise.

Thanks with Best,
Nhu Vo

Dear Nhu Vo,

Looking at the price of normal tickets compared to the JR Pass, it makes good sense to use a 7 day JR Pass.

Here's a quick list of ticket prices:

Hakata - Hiroshima ¥ 8,740
Hiroshima - Osaka ¥ 10,030
Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 560
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,400

For a total of ¥ 32,730 or at least ¥ 3,620 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. The JR Pass covers all these routes and much more. The JR Pass also covers the sightseeing bus in Hiroshima, local travel on the JR network in Osaka and even to a limited extend in Kyoto, so you won't have to buy many other tickets.

For travel to Fuji, your JR Pass will have expired when you travel to Fuji, so buying a tour package could be a good option. Or you could travel there on your own, if you prefer more freedom. Eitherway works well!

Hope this helps,
Daniel

A 7 day pass would be worth it. There is a lot in your itinerary to see.

Fukuoka has a number of good places that most people simply overlook or just don't know about. The Nanzoin Temple is extraordinary and no to mention free!

There are many good parks as well as shopping. See:

For Hiroshima, most go to see the city for the Peace Park/Museum, but Miyajima is the best site in the area. Also some excellent places are Iwakuni and Onomichi:

If you are going to Tokyo, you can largely skip Osaka during the day. But Nara is a must-see place and if you can, the newly renovated Himeji Castle is Japan's finest.
For Fuji, weather often obscures the view - so a good place to visit is Hakone, which along with the view gives other things to see and do. See:
