Hi all,

I would be travelling to Japan with my wife this September. Right now our draft itinerary are as follows:

Day 1: Arrived Narita Airport(early morning) - Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo - Lake Kawaguchi - Kyoto (if possible, if not will stay 1 night here and then going to Kyoto on Day 3)
Day 3: Kyoto
Day 4: Kyoto
Day 5: Half day Kyoto - Takayama - Shirakogawa - Tokyo (if possible, if not stay 1 night here and going back to Tokyo on Day 6)
Day 6: Tokyo
Day 7: Tokyo
Day 8: Tokyo - Depart Narita Airport (early morning)

I want to know if the schedule is ok or should I change some of it. And also would JR Pass worth it for my schedule, or just normal tickets?

Thanks

Wan

Hello Wan,

The basics look good but you do need to tweak your itinerary a little here and there.

One is visiting Kawaguchiko, I would do so as a day trip from Tokyo and travel on the next day to Kyoto. Doing the full train Kawaguchiko - Kyoto on a single day take up a lot of time and you won't be able to do much that way.

The other point is Takayama and Shirakawago, there's quite a bit of travel involved here as well. This this in half a day simply is not possible. I would recommend staying two nights for this in Takayama with (half) a day visit to Shirakawago.
Here's a bit more access information.

As for the JR Pass, definitely get one if you visit both Kyoto and Takayama in a 7 day period. You will make very good savings over normal tickets this way.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
