'best of japan in 14 days'

'Best of Japan in 14 days'

Hi there, I'm looking at doing roughly this itinerary in early April 2016 minus a couple of stops:

Day 1 and 2 - Tokyo
Day 3 - Side trip to Nikko
Day 4 - Tokyo to Hakone
Day 5 to 7 - Kyoto
Day 8 - Side trip to Nara
Day 9 - Kyoto to Miyajima via Himeji
Day 10 - Miyajima to Kanazawa via Hiroshima
Day 11 - Kanazawa
Day 12 - Kanazawa to Shirakawago
Day 13 - Shirakawago to Takayama
Day 14 - Takayama to Tokyo

and would be grateful for advice on what JR Rail Pass to buy any any other tips.

  • I will probably skip the Nara side trip as I've been before.

  • I want to have time to spend at least two half days hiking around Kyoto and Kanazawa so may need to cut one other thing. Should that be Hakone or something else?

Many thanks in advance, G

Hi there,

You will certainly get the Best of Japan Rail Pass with this itinerary! Going for a 14 day JR Pass will give you amazing savings and it will cover by far the bigger part of the itinerary.

As for what to skip, this is a hard question because all places included are great. However you could cut Hakone if you want to have a day more in Kyoto. This would easy to add in and would not change the itinerary a lot. The same goes for Nara however and it may be a better option to skip if you've already seen it, or you could add that day to Kanazawa if you'd like a bit more time there. In the end though, this is a personal preference.

Just keep in mind that your itinerary already looks very good even if you drop one or two palces.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Daniel. Much appreciated. Which parts will not be covered by the pass if you don't mind me asking?

Hi again!

That would be the bus to and from Shirakawago and local travel within the Hakone Area. All other travel between the above places is included.
