Here is my itinerary for March 26-April 4th. Please let me know your thoughts about transportation. I think the JR Pass would be the best choice, but I am particularly confused with the Tokyo-Hakone part of our trip. I have looked at the Hyerdia site, but I am still confused as to the right choice. Should I purchase the JR Pass? Can we still do the romantic car that I have read about going to Mt. Fuji?

I would also love day trip ideas from Tokyo maybe for the 29th or 30th. We have no interest in Disney (until we come with our kiddos).

March 27th-Tokyo Take N'EX train from Narita to Shinjuku Station.

March 28th-Tokyo Tsukiji Market and night tour in Tokyo

March 29th- Tokyo

March 30th- Tokyo

March 31- Leave Tokyo head to Mt. Fuji. Ryokan is at Miyanoshita station. THIS is the confusing part. Is this a difficult interchange from Tokyo? It seems like there are many transfers to this station.

April 1- Train to Nara. Again, coming from Miyanoshita station seems to be quite complicated.

April 2- Nara-Kyoto We have scheduled a private half day tour of Kyoto to try to see as much as we can in a short time. Do you have suggestions for what to see to maximize our tour guide?

April 3-KyotoI found a great self guided tour on japan-guide.com for Arashiyama full day tour. Is this feasible to do on our own? Then we can use the guide to help us see some temples and palaces.

April 4- Kyoto to Osaka Leaving Kyoto in the early morning and spending 4-5 hours in Osaka before flying home.

Thank you for your help and any suggestions you have.

Hi there,

I checked your itinerary and think that buying normal tickets for your trip would work better than using a JR Pass. A JR Pass works best if you travel longer distances in Japan, for instance a return Tokyo - Kyoto will quickly help you make savings.

Your itinerary basically is a one way trip from Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka with stops at Hakone on the way.

Miyanoshita is on the Tozan-Hakone line. I would use the following route, form Tokyo take a local train or the bullet train to Odawara station. Here transfer to the Tozan-Hakone line to Miyanoshita.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
