7 or 14 day pass?

Hello, I have seen some great posts on this forum and am hoping someone can advise me on a trip to Japan during sakura season. My itinerary is as follows:
March 24th arrive Tokyo
March 25th in Tokyo
March 26th in Tokyo
March 27th day in Tokyo, leave for Matsumoto that night
March 28th day in Matsumoto, leave for Kyoto that night
March 29th Kyoto
March 30th Nara/ Kyoto
March 31st day in Kyoto, leave for Himeji that night
April 1st day in Himeji, leave for Osaka that night
April 2nd Osaka
April 3rd day in Osaka, return to Tokyo
April 4th Tokyo
April 5th day in Tokyo, return to U.S. that afternoon

Should I go with a 7-day pass for the cross-country week and use local passes or go with the 14-day? With the 7-day, either the trip from Tokyo to Matsumoto would not be covered or the Osaka to Tokyo would not be covered since that is an 8 day span. Also, I just want to clarify...1st class ticket allows me to bring multiple pieces of luggage but regular is just carry-on?

Thanks,
Jon

Hello Jon,

I think using a 7 day JR Pass would work best between March 28th and April 3rd. This will give you the best possible savings and cover the major distances using the JR Pass.

Then buy a normal ticket from Tokyo - Matsumoto (or use a less pricey express bus). Green Class (or 1st Class) does allow for more space but there are no strict luggage limitations in 2nd class either. It's fine to bring a suitcase with you.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
