Hi there,

I'd recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for your itinerary and use it from March 3 to March 9. This will give you amazing value over normal tickets.

Kyoto - Hiroshima (return) ¥ 21,780
Kyoto - Tokyo ¥ 13,400
Tokyo - Nikko (return) ¥ 10,760
Tokyo - Osaka ¥ 13,940

For a total of ¥ 59,880 or ¥ 30,770 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110.

In Kyoto you could use the local 500 yen Kyoto bus Ticket. Which provides unlimited travel a day on all city buses for 500yen. A normal ticket is 230yen per ride, so making savings is easy.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hello,

Thank you very much for your fast reply; I have purchased the 7 day pass.
Now that the pass is sorted out, I'm ironing out the details of my itinerary and wondering if I could get your opinion, please:

As mentioned above, on March 2, I want to travel to Mount Koya and stay overnight at a temple. Then, on March 3, I would like to travel to Hiroshima. This will also be the first day I activate the pass. I have two questions regarding this:
1) Does it make more sense to leave from the station near Mount Koya (is it Gokurakubashi?) and head straight for Hiroshima, or to head back to Kyoto first, and then go?
2) Since either way, I believe I would be arriving in the afternoon (possibly late afternoon), would you say it is better for me to stay in Hiroshima for the night, then take a bullet train from Hiroshima to Tokyo the next day?

Again, I appreciate any feedback you can give me.
Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Hi nf20,

Thank you for ordering the JR Pass! I am glad to hear that the details are falling into place.

1.) The best route from mount Koya to Hiroshima, is to take the Nankai express from Gokurakubashi and travel via Namba to Shin-Osaka, like this, and take the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima.

2.) I somewhat assumed that you would stay the night in Hiroshima, this is also what I would do. You can reach Hiroshima in mid noon if you leave early but you'll want time to look around. Taking the bullet train back to Tokyo the following day also spreads your travel better and you could even make a visit to Miyajima if you have some time left.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
