Hello!

I'm planning a 14 day trip to Japan and would like to know if my itinerary is reasonable (if it is too packed, what do you recommend I omit?) and am I better off buying the 7 day or 14 day Japan Rail Pass?

June 3, 4, 5, 6 - Tokyo (with day trip to Nikko)
(June 7 travel Tokyo to Takayama) June 7, 8 - Takayama
June 8 – bus to Shirakawa-go (evening)
(June 9 morning travel Shirakawago to Kanazawa) June 9,10 - Kanazawa
June 11 – Mount Koya
June 12, 13, 14 – Kyoto
June 15 – Hiroshima (?side trip to Miyajima)
June 16 – train Hiroshima to Tokyo
June 17 – fly back home

Thank you very much!

Melanie

Hi Melanie,

I would recommend a 14 day JR Pass for your travel, since you start traveling around Japan almost right from the beginning. Both Nikko and Takayama are trips that can add up to quite a high a mount without the JR Pass.

I think your trip looks great, there's a nice amount of time to get a good feeling of each place you plan to visit. I would also recommend a visit to Miyajima and perhaps take a train later in the afternoon back to Tokyo on the 16th.

Something you may be interested in is the 1,500yen ticket on the Narita Express from Narita Airport - Tokyo. This because you are in Japan for 15 days and you would be 1 day without a JR Pass. My advice would be to use this ticket on day 1 and start using your JR Pass on day 2.

Have a great trip!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your quick and very helpful reply! The airport pass is a great idea and I will add Mayajima to the itinerary!

All the best,

Melanie
