Dear Sir,

Here is my itinerary in Japan. Which pass will save me more money? 7 or 14 Days?

Day 1: Arrive Kansai, Osaka
Day 2: Osaka <--> Hiroshima
Day 3: Osaka <--> Himeji
Day 4: Osaka <--> Kobe
Day 5: Osaka <--> Kyoto
Day 6: Osaka <--> Nara
Day 7: Osaka --> Hakone
Day 8: Hakone
Day 9: Hakone --> Tokyo
Day 10: Tokyo <--> Nikko
Day 11: Tokyo <--> Yokohama
Day 12: Tokyo
Day 13: Tokyo
Day 14: Tokyo --> Narita (Departure)

Thank you.

Hi there,

The best option would be to take a 7 day JR Pass and cover travel to Hiroshima, Himeji, Hakone, Tokyo and Nikko with it. These are by far the most expensive routes. However this would mean a little replanning.

For instance you could do:

Day 1 Arrival
Day 2 Kyoto
Day 3 Kobe
Day 4 Kyoto
Day 5 Hiroshima - Start using JR Pass
Day 6 Himeji
Day 7: Osaka --> Hakone
Day 8: Hakone
Day 9: Hakone --> Tokyo
Day 10: Tokyo Nikko
Day 11: Tokyo Yokohama End 7 day JR Pass
Day 12: Tokyo
Day 13: Tokyo
Day 14: Tokyo --> Narita (Departure)

This would give you the best possible savings. If you can't change your plans, than a 14 day JR Pass would still give you very good savings compared to purchasing normal tickets.

Hope you find this useful,
Daniel

Daniel san,

My itinerary has been changed as following. When should I start using the 7 day JR Pass to gain the best value of it?

Day 1 Arriving KIX Osaka
Day 2 Osaka
Day 3 Osaka Nara
Day 4 Osaka Kyoto
Day 5 Osaka Kobe
Day 6 Osaka Hiroshima
Day 7 Osaka --> Hakone
Day 8 Hakone
Day 9 Hakone -->Tokyo
Day 10 Tokyo Yokohama
Day 11 Tokyo
Day 12 Tokyo
Day 13 Tokyo
Day 14 Tokyo --> Narita (Departure)

Hi again,

I would at least include travel to Hiroshima and to Tokyo, these are the most expensive trips. Looking at your itinerary, I think day 4-10 is likely the best option, as you can use the Shinkansen to travel both to Kyoto and Yohohama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
