I will be visiting Japan for 15 days ...

March 16 Arrive NRT Airport , Check in hotel in Shinjuku
March 17 to 21 Tokyo surrounding , NIkko, Hakone
March 21 to 22 Hakone to Takayama
March 22-24 Takayam/ Shirajawago/ Kanzawa/ Takayama
March 24 to 25 Takayama to Hiroshima
March 25 to 30 Hiroshima to Kyoto ---> side trip to Nara, Himeji ( if time permits)
March 31 Kyoto to NRT Airport

Is the above itinerary realistic ?
7 days or 14 days pass ?
How can I tweak the above itinerary flow if I were to buy the 7 days pass ?
Is it worth while to splurge on the Green Pass ? for above routes , are the trains/ rail equipped with Green Car ?

I am flexible with the itinerary flow.. I just want to mak sure I optimise my time in Japan, Your expert suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Best Regards Kathleen

Hello Kathleen,

You will be covering a lot of miles and using a 14 day JR Pass will give you a lot of savings. The expancive trips are travel to Nikko, Takayama, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Himeji and back to NRT airport. Using a JR Pass for these routes is a must.

I don't really see a way to use a 7 day JR Pass unless you were to cut out cities all together from your itinerary.

There will be Green Class cars on all the routes I can see (outside of the side trip to Nara).

The route you have now works well, so I would keep it as it is.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
