Hi,

We will visit Japan from December 31, 2014 to Jan 07, 2015. Below is my proposed itinerary. Please give me advice to make the plan practical and cost saving

31-Dec-14 Arrive at Nogoya at 8.30 am
31-Dec-14 Nagoya - Osaka - 1 day in Osaka
1-Jan-15 Osaka - Kyoto - 2 days in Kyoto
3-Jan-15 Kyoto-Mt. Fuji - 1 day in Mt Fuji
4-Jan-15 Fuji Mt. - Tokyo
5-Jan-15 Tokyo
6-Jan-15 Tokyo - Nagoya
7-Jan-15 Nagoya to Chubu Central International Airport. Flight at 9.25 am

And, JR Pass is useful?

Tks very much

Hi Ngoc,

I've made a list of normal ticket prices below, to see if the JR Pass would be helpful.

Nagoya - Osaka ¥ 6,350
Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 560
Kyoto - Fuji ¥ 15,050 + extra fare of ¥ 1,140 (Where do you wish to travel exactly near Fuji? I used Kawaguchiko as reference station)
Kawaguchiko - Tokyo ¥ 2,940 + extra fare of ¥ 1,140
Tokyo - Nagoya ¥ 10,880

For a total of ¥ 35,780 or ¥ 6,670 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110.

Note that I used Kawaguchiko above as example for travel to Fuji. There are many places around Fuji you can visit but Kawaguchiko is the most popular. Note that the last part traveled to Kawaguchiko is done using a private railway and an extra fare of ¥ 1,140 is required.

Hope this helps!

It is me again, Daniel-san,

Come back to my proposed itinerary

31-Dec-14 Arrive at Nogoya at 8.30 am
31-Dec-14 Nagoya - Osaka - 1 day in Osaka
1-Jan-15 Osaka - Kyoto - 2 days in Kyoto
3-Jan-15 Kyoto-Mt. Fuji - 1 day in Mt Fuji
4-Jan-15 Fuji Mt. - Tokyo
5-Jan-15 Tokyo
6-Jan-15 Tokyo - Nagoya
7-Jan-15 Nagoya to Chubu Central International Airport. Flight at 9.25 am

There are many attractions and I can not make decision which ones I should go due to time limit. Could you please add some specific places or make adjustment on above itinerary.

Thank you very much.

Hi again!

Looks good really, just be sure to research what you wish to visit and see around Fuji as transport can be difficult if you don't know where to go.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Daniel-san,

I will arrive Chubu Centrair International Airport at 8:30AM on Wed 31 Dec 2014. Is it possible and where to exchange JR Pass . Since the following days are public holiday, office shall be closed.

Thanks

Kr

Hi Bao Ngoc,

Sorry for the late replay! I thought that I had posted one already.

Once you arrive at Chubu Airport, take the Kintetsu line to Nagoya Airport. Here you can activate your JR Pass every day of the year.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel-san,

You mentioned that we take the Kintetsu line from Chubu Airport to Nagoya Airport or Nagoya Station to activate JR Pass?

And It seems that JR Pass can not be used from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko? Please confirm.

Tks you.

Hi there,

Yes, you'd have to take the Kintetsu from the Airport to Nagoya station 1st.

As for Kawaguchiko. It is true that the last part Otsuki - Kawaguchiko is not included in the JR Pass, as you travel on a different train company. The extra fare is 1,150yen. Travel from Tokyo - Otsuki is covered by the JR Pass with otherwise would cost 2,000-3,000yen, depending on trains travelled on. So there are certainly savings to be made with the JR Pass!
