This will be our first time to Japan. We are arriving at Narita on October 28 in the late afternoon. We plan to be in Tokyo (Grand Arc Hanzomon) from October 28-29. Leave for Kyoto on October 30 and use Kyoto as our base to make day trips to Osaka and Nara. Returning to Tokyo on November 4 to November 9. I would like to use the NEX to get to and from Narita to Tokyo. While in Tokyo, we will be in the Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku areas and we would like to take a day trip to Mt. Fuji and possibly to Hakone, if time permits. Should we be buying the 7-day or 14 day pass? Or, would it be better to buy the 7-day pass and purchase a RT NEX tickets and a RT Mt. Fuji tickets separately? With the JR Pass, will we be needing other subway tickets? I've heard of the SUICA and Pasmo travel cards. What are the differences?

Hi there,

I recommend the 7 day JR Pass and use it to make the return Tokyo - Kyoto with it and then try to cover as much travel with it as possible. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the bullet train, now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price. You can for instance use it for travel to Osaka, Nara or even a bit further to the castle of Himeji or Hiroshima.

Buying a NEX return tickets is a good way to get to and from Tokyo, additionally Suica and Pasmo are the same kind of thing. A prepaid travel card and they are interchangeable.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi again!

Well there's only one route to Hokkaido, however it is a long route from Tokyo. (about 10h).

The alternative is to take a flight. With the train there's only one route, taking the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Shin-Aomori and from there by express trains to Sapporo.

Thank you for your quick reply. Can we use JR Pass to take express trains?
