My wife Leticia and I will be visiting Japan soon... We planned a 22 days holiday. For us is like realizing a dream!

Day 1 – 31/03 - 10.35 am – landing in Narita – transfer and nignt in Tokyo
Day 2 – 01/04 - day and night in Tokyo
Day 3 – 02/04 - day and night in Tokyo
Day 4 – 03/04 - moving to Nikko and night in Nikko
Day 5 – 04/04 - moving to Kamakura and night in Kamakura
Day 6 – 05/04 - moving to Osaka and night in Osaka
Day 7 – 06/04 - day and night in Osaka
Day 8 – 07 /04 - moving to Hiroshima via Himeji Castle – night in Hiroshima
Day 9 – 08/04 - day and night in Hiroshima
Day 10 – 09/04 - Miyajima – night in Hiroshima
Day 11 – 10/04 - moving to Hakata – night in Hakata
Day 12 – 11/04 - moving to Nagasaki – night in Nagasaki
Day 13 – 12/04 - moving to Beppu – night in Beppu
Day 14 – 13/04 - moving to Kyoto – night in Kyoto
Day 15 – 14/04 - day and night in Kyoto
Day 16 – 15/04 - day trip to Nara – night in Kyoto
Day 17 – 16/04 - day and night in Kyoto (or day trip to Kanazawa and night in Kyoto)
Day 18 – 17/04 - moving to Tokyo – night in Tokyo
Day 19 – 18/04 - day and night in Tokyo
Day 20 – 19/04 - day trip to Kusatsu – night in Tokyo
Day 21 – 20/04 - day and night in Tokyo
Day 22 – 21/04 - road to Narita – 12.00 am leaving Japan

If I understood correctly, the 21 days Japan Rail Pass will cover everything but one of the two Narita Express transfer between Airport and Tokyo (and I'll have to pay for it the first day or the last day).

Please feel free to adjust or to suggest any change you believe it would make our holiday even more unforgettable.

I have a couple of doubts and I hope you can help me. I have not clear how much we will be able to move in Tokyo with the JRP. Is it enough or we will need daily pass for Metro?
The day trip to Kanazawa and Kusatsu will make our days too much heavy or you think we can easily make it?

Thank you in advance for your precious help and advices.
Your work and your words are incredible and helping us so very much!

Hugs from Italy,
Leticia and Diego

Hi guys
I know Daniel Sam will answer your questions, but as my wife and I have been in Japan for 30 days in Nov / 2014 like to comment your trip.
1. In central Tokyo, there are two JR train lines that circulate within the city. The Yamanote and Chuo Line. We only use the Metro a few times, like going on Asakusa from Ueno and the Tsukiji Fish Market. So booking the hotel next to the station
2. In Osaka also use the JR train line
3. In Kyoto, for 500 yen a day has bus lines that come out in front of the JR station to reach almost all the main places to visit
4. If possible, leave more days in Kyoto. We stayed 5 days and we could not see everything. The castles, Pagodas, Parks, Shops Street, Food ...
5. In Nikko, in JR train station, buy a bus pass that will go through the main points of access. You go down and up several times
6. If possible, rent one portable wifi router, which will help a lot.
7. Ferry in Miyajima out of 15 in 15 minutes and is included in the pass JR
8. dispatch the bags whenever possible. Use the Kuroneko. Trains have few places to leave the bags
9. All JR stations have place to leave your bags if needed. 300 to 600 depending on the size

Greetings from Brazil !!

Hello sseijiis,

thank you very much for your useful tips and information, we really appreciate!
We will make very few adjustments and begin to book some hotels, ryokan and last accomodations.

I have been to Brazil twice for about a month each and it's amazing ...country... nature... people... beaches... really loved it!

Thanks again and greetings from Italy

Hello Leticia & Diego and sseijiis,

As sseijiis mentions there are two main lines in Tokyo, in addition there are many other lines criss crossing the city as well. This is a full map. These provide access to the greater part of Tokyo, some places however are only reached by Metro, namely Asakusa and Odaiba.

You could make the day trip to Kanazawa if you really want to do it. The route is about 120 minutes so certainly possible. However you could also just take it easy and enjoy Kyoto a little extra.

Lastly, you will be a good amount of time traveling. Be sure to bring a good book or something else to keep yourself entertained. You could try to pick up some Japanese on the way :)

Buon viaggio!
Daniel

PS, use the JR Pass for the return to Narita Airport. You can buy a 1,500yen ticket for your arrival. It is only valid for travel into Tokyo, so be sure to pick it up on arrival.
