Hi there,

We are planning our trip to Japan and could use your help. We will arrive at Osaka and will depart from Tokyo 17 days later. We have come up to the following itinerary:

1-10 Osaka
2-10 day trip Mt Koya
3-10 Hiroshima/Miyajima
4-10 Himeji - Kyoto
5-10 / 8-10 Kyoto (with day trip to Nara)
9-10 Kanazawa - Takayama
10-10 Kamikochi
11-10 Matsumoto
12-10 Nagano and trip to snow monkeys
13-10 Hakone
14-10 / 18-10 Tokyo (with day trip to Nikko)

We thought a JR Pass for 14 days would be a good option, but will it be possible to use it for the whole itinerary?

Thanks a lot for your help!

Hello there,

A 14 day JR Pass will indeed be a great option! The JR Pass can be used for most of your itinerary, however there are parts that can't be reached using the JR Pass. These are:

Osaka - Koya-san
The bus to Kamikochi
Travel from Nagano station - Snow monkey park
Local travel within Hakone.

All other is included and you can make very good savings using the 14 day JR Pass.

I would recommend using the 14 day RJ Pass from 3-10, this way you get the best possible coverage. Koya is not too far from Osaka and you could use a Koya Heritage Pass instead.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel,

Thanks for your help. When I calculate the costs of our itinerary it's a total of 61.990 yen. But with a JR Pass and the costs for parts that can't be reached with JR Pass it is a total of 66.071 yen. Or is this not correct (we've let Kanazawa out of our itinerary)?

Osaka- Koyasan: 2860
Osaka - Hiroshima: 9710
Hiroshima - Miyajima - Hiroshima: 1180
Hiroshima -Himeji -Kyoto: 6700
Kyoto - Nara - Kyoto: 1420
Kyoto - Takayama: 9500
Takayama -Kamikochi: 2730
Kamikochi - Matsumoto: 4450
Matsumoto -Nagano: 1140
Nagano - Snow Monkeys - Nagano: 2800
Nagano- Hakone - Tokyo: 12000
Tokyo -Nikko: 2720
total: 61990

JR PASS 14 days 46,390 + 2860 + 2730 + 4450 + 2800 + 4000 = 63230

Thanks a lot!

Hi again!

That looks good to me, note that traveling to Nikko can cost a lot more if you use the Shinkansen. This is also covered by the JR Pass. Also not sure where you get the 4000 figure. However the rest looks good.
