Hi,

I plan to go on the following trip through Japan at the end of October, beginning of November.

I'll be:

  1. Landing in Osaka
  2. Spending 4 days in Kyoto
  3. Going to Takayama where I plan to visit ( Shirakawago, Kanazawa, Kamikochi )
  4. Going on Kiso Valley, I will stay in Magome for 4 days ( visiting around Tsumago, Narai, etc. )
4.Going to Tokyo where I'll spend the last 4 days ( maybe going to Nikko and Fuji-San from there ).

Is it worth buying the 14 days travel pass?

Thank you,
Kind regards,
Izabela

Hi Izabela,

I checked your itinerary for the best option and recommend purchasing normal tickets for this itinerary. This because normal tickets simply don't add up enough to a point where you can make savings using a JR Pass.

The rest of the itinerary looks great though!

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thank you so much for your reply. That's what I thought as well. I forgot to mention that I'm leaving from Tokyo, so I really don't need an Osaka-Tokyo and return.

Hopefully it's going to be a nice trip and I can manage the remote areas where people don't really speak english :).

Kind regards,
Izabela

Hi,
While the regular full JR Pass wouldn't pay off, you might look at some regional passes. The Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass might just work for you, plus to see Mt Fuji you can use a Hakone Freepass and for Nikko there is the Tobu Nikko Free Pass.

One other possibility is using a JR Kanto Area Pass which can get you part of the way from Nagano to Tokyo, as well as from Tokyo to Nikko and other day trip areas.

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.

Best of luck.
