Hi, we are planning a family trip to Japan (2A, 2C) from 29/11-12/12/2016.. Would appreciate some advice in the use of the JRPass.

Our current itinerary is:
29/11: Arrive in Narita. Intend to activate 7D JR Pass and travel to Osaka.
29/11 - 2/12: Stay in Osaka while making trips to Universal Studios, Nara etc
2/12: Travel to Kyoto
2/12-5/12: Stay in Kyoto (Day trip to Hiroshima, etc)
5/12: Back to Tokyo (Shinjuku)
We intend to buy the Fuji-Hakone 3 day pass and visit Fuji area before returning to Tokyo for the last few days of our trip.

We are considering visiting Takayama too. Could we get some advice at which point of our trip should we make the trip there? Is it worthwhile to travel from Kyoto to Takayama on the last day of our JR pass and spend a night in Takayama before buying a single-trip ticket from Takayama to Tokyo?

Also would like to know if there are any onsens/ ryokans or "must-visit" places you could recommend based on our itinerary.

Thanks for your help! :)

Hi there,

With the trip you currently have planned, I would stick to what you already have. 7 Days to visit Osaka, Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima and travel back to Tokyo already is a lot. Adding in Takayama would leave you more time on the train than for sightseeing. Also a one way Takayama - Tokyo is around 15,000yen, which is more than half the cost of a JR Pass. If you really want to go to Takayama, consider spending a bit of time less around Tokyo and use a 14 day JR Pass.

Good places for Ryokan are Kyoto and Hakone, look around a little and you will find some really nices ones. I also recommend visiting Kurama (onsen) near Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
