14 days in japan!

14 Days in Japan!

Hello, I am looking for some advice on purchasing a 7 day JR pass or 14 day JR Pass based on the itinerary below:

Day 1 - Narita --> Tokyo
Day 2 - Tokyo
Day 3 - Tokyo --> Fuji --> Tokyo
Day 4 - Tokyo
Day 5 - Tokyo --> Osaka
Day 6 - Osaka
Day 7 - Osaka --> Hiroshima --> Osaka
Day 8 - Osaka
Day 9 - Osaka --> Kobe --> Osaka
Day 10 - Osaka --> Kyoto
Day 11 - Kyoto
Day 12 - Kyoto --> Tokyo
Day 13 - Tokyo
Day 14 - Tokyo --> Narita

Purchasing a 7 day pass will require that I purchase some individual tickets. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello there,

I would use a 7 day JR Pass from Day 4 to Day 12. This will give you the best value by far and would not require the purchase of a 14 day JR Pass (although you travel so much that a 14 day JR Pass would give you savings as well).

For travel to Fuji see:

Hope this helps,

Thanks Daniel. Are the JR Passes scheduled by the day or by the hour? For example, if I activated the JR Pass on Day 5 at night, does that count as a full day for Day 5?

Also, looks like my itinerary won't allow me to use the 7 day pass to cover the long trips from Tokyo to Osaka (Day 5) and Kyoto to Tokyo (Day 12). Based on that fact is it better to purchase the 14 day pass instead?

Hi Alan,

Passes are counted per day, no matter what time you start using them. I see I wrote day 4 in my previous reply but this should be day 5. That said, the travel outside of this period is below the cost of a 14 day JR Pass, so I still think that using a 7 day JR Pass is the best option.

All the best,
