I visited Japan last year staying 10 days and visiting - Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima and Nagano. I liked it so much I am back again this year, this time with my girlfriend. It's her first time.

We have 14 days - she would like to do Hiroshima,Tokyo and and Kyoto. I really want to explore a little further afield and leave Honshu. We are visiting right at the start of October.

I was thinking either going south and seeing Nagasaki and some of Kyushu. The other tempting option is going north to Nikko, Sendai, and up Hakadate/Mori - and hopefully see the Autumn leaves. Grateful for your advice and suggestions on exploring a little further afield, and whether either either of the routes suggested above would work.

Hi Claymore,

I know that feeling, once you get hooked to Japan, it becomes an addition :)

Personally I prefer the south of Japan over the northern part of the main Island (Hokkaido is great though).
You could visit Kyushu and or Shikoku. Kyushu especially has lot's to offers and there's a variety of things to do and see. Think Nagasaki, Fukuoka and Kagoshima for nice cities, Buppu for Onsen, Aso for volcano climbing/hiking, Kurokawa for a secret retreat and Kurume for the ramen!

Shikoku is very nice too, lot's of temples, small islands and then there is the Matsuyama dogo spa.

The north is also a valid option though, I would visit Nikko in any case, as you'll be in Tokyo. Sendai / Matsushima and Yamadera are all nice places to visit in Tohoku.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

That's really helpful, thank you. I think you're right a combination of Kyushu and adding in Nikko could work well.

Thanks again. Claymore
