Hello Daniel-san. My family of 5 (2 adults and 3 children - 5yo, 7yo and 9yo) will be arriving in Japan via Narita airport. We will be travelling quite extensively and would like to know if we need to get a JR pass. The following is our itinerary:

28 November: arrive Narita airport and head to Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay where we will stay for 3 nights, just focusing on Disneyland and disneysea.
1 December: checking out and heading to Richmond Hotel Asakusa where we will be staying 3 nights. We are planning to go Fuji, Tsukiji, Shinjuku area.
4 December: checking out and heading to Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport where we will be staying for 7 nights. From this base, we are planning to visit Universal studios, Kyoto, Kobe, Nara and explore the aquarium and science centre in Osaka.
11 December: checking out and heading to Narita for flight back.

Which JR pass would suit our itinerary best?

Thank you, Daniel-san.

Hi there,

I must say that its quite hard to match a JR Pass to your itinerary. A 7 day JR Pass would be perfect if you would return to Tokyo within 7 days, however you will take 8 days. So the alternative is look at a 14 day JR Pass, which does cost a bit more. Travel from Kansai Airport every day to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe however does cost a good amount as well, especially if you wish to travel on high speed trains, like the Haruka Express. With that in mind I do think that the 14 day JR Pass is an option to consider. If you really want to make the best use out of it, consider adding in a day trip to Hiroshima from Kansai or Nikko from Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you, Daniel-san, for your prompt reply. Is there any other better itinerary that you could suggest?

Better in what way? What I would suggest is looking at a hotel closer to Osaka or Tokyo stations. This would save you a lot of travel time. Going back and forth to Kansai Airport will at least add a 1h of travel time each day.
