Hi I am travelling to Japan for three weeks and wanted to check if I should get the 14 day pass and also if my plan of where to go is good:

31 July arrive tokyo stay for 5 nights visiting imperial palace, Shinto meji shrine, ginza, electric town, nikko.

5 august travel to kyoto stay for 5 nights visiting all sites and Nara.

10 august travel to Hiroshima stay for 2 nights visit miyajima

12 august travel to Kagoshima stay for 2/3 nights

14/15 august travel to Kobe stay 2 nights

16/17 august travel to hakone stay 2/3 nights

18/19 august back to tokyo for 1/2 nights before flying home.

Is it worth the 14 day rail pass if so should I use from 5 august to get the best use??? Do I still validate upon arrival in japan and then book first tickets for kyoto??? Are any of these journeys on the bullet trains??

Is Kobe worth a visit/stop
Is it worth stopping in hakone or do as a trip from tokyo??

Is there anywhere I have missed worth a visit I was thinking of heading to nagao/kamicochi??

Many thanks
Natalie

Hi Natalie,

First let me say: great itinerary! There are many spots of would heartily recommend, also love the visit to Kagoshima.

The 14 JR Pass will offer you great value over purchasing normal tickets. Making the return Tokyo to Kagoshima alone pays for more than the pass. All the extra travel will make for very good savings. Most journeys are actually on the Shinmkansen, this includes travel betweenTokyo - Kyoto - Kagoshima - Kobe - Hakone - Tokyo.

As for Kobe and Hakone, both are well worth a visit and make for easy stop overs in this itinerary. Kobe is especially nice, it's not a city you visit for a couple of big tourist attractions. Instead the charm lies in all the small local attractions found around the city. This is a brilliant website for tips on what to visit in Kobe.

Hakone is also a wonderful stop over, the park is scenic and offers an amazing view on Fuji (with a bit of luck added in from the weather.

As for additional stops Kamikochi and Matsumoto are wonderful as well, other stops I can recommend are Matsue, Kanazawa and Takayama. Although I am not sure how to fit them in.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
