Hi there,

1.) The most expansive trips in your itinerary are:

Kyoto - Takayama ¥ 9,870
Takayama - Tokyo ¥ 14,620

The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,100, so the difference is quite small. Add in travel to Hakone and other possible day trips and a 7 day JR Pass is certainly worth considering. You can also use www.hyperdia.com to check any route.

2.) Kenroku-en garden in Kanazawa is also a great visit, or de Adachi art museum in Matsue (however this is a bit off the route). Hitachi seaside part is also a great visit.

3.) I think you mean TashiroJima cat island? Its located in Miyagi, north of Tokyo. Its possible to visit as a day trip (and the JR Pass is a big help) but its still a long trip. A detailed blog post can be found here.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
