Hello,

We are ariving in Japan in late April 2015 and we want to see as much as possible during our short 11 day stay ;)
We are 5 adults and our plan looks something like this:
Day1 - Arrive in Tokyo Narita airport at noon and spend the day around Tokyo
Day2 - Tokyo sightseeing
Day3 - Tokyo sight seeing
Day4 - day trip to Mt.Fuji and Aokigahara
Day5 - day trip to Nikko
Day6 - day trip to Kamakura or Matsumoto castle, we simply don't have the time to do both :(
Day7 - travel to Kyoto either by night train or early in the morning, than Kyoto sightseeing
Day8 - day trip to Koya San
Day9 - day trip to Hiroshima and Miyajima island
Day10 - day trip to Nara
Day11 - sightseeing in Kyoto and than maybe a night train to Narita or leave rearly and travel to Tokyo for a night
Day12 - We leave at Narita airpot at 12 so this day is almost useless :(

All days can be moved around we don't have a set schedule. My question is should we get a 7 day JR pass and if yes for which days to use it. Or get the 14day pass and be free to travel as much as we like?

Hi there,

The trip Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Nara - Tokyo, already pays for more than the 14 day JR Pass! In other words you'll make great savings with either the 7 day or 14 day JR Pass.

The budgetary option would be to take the 7 day JR Pass and use it from day 5 - 12, this would allow you to cover all expansive travel with the 7 day JR Pass, including the way back to Narita Airport. This is what I would recommend myself.

You could also consider the 14 da JR Pass if you wish for a little more flexibility. The JR Pass could then also be used for travel to and within Tokyo and it would also give you more flexibility if plans change.

Also day 12 is not useless at all! Why not head early to Tsukiji Fish Market in the morning and travel to Narita Airport after? It will put your last day to good use and you can sleep better on the airplane.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
