Hi,

Is this a feasable itinary?
Is it worth buying the JR-pass for this?

9/6: arrival in Tokyo by lunchtime
9/7 Tokyo
9/8 Tokyo
9/9 leaving Tokyo for Kyoto
9/10 Kyoto
9/11 Kyoto
9/12 leaving Kyoto for Nara then returning to Tokyo
9/13 Daytrip to Hakone, Mt Fuji or Nikko. Possibly this: http://www.viator.com/tours/Tokyo/Mt-Fuji-Day-Trip-including-Lake-Ashi-Sightseeing-Cruise-from-Tokyo/d334-2142TYO_F880_F830 or http://www.lonelyplanet.com/japan/tokyo/activities/sightseeing-tours/mt-fuji-lake-ashi-bullet-train-day-trip-tokyo
9/14 last day in Tokyo, sleeping in the airport at night because I fly the next day at 7AM

Is this realistic? Am I spending too much or to little time somewhere? Which daytrip would you reccomend? If I cut off a Tokyo or Kyoto day I might do a second day trip.

Can I ride the train just like that or do I need to make reservations?

Kind regards,
Kristel

Hi Kristel,

A JR Pass would be a good option for the above itinerary. A 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto on the Shinkansen. Basically any additional travel is what you save :)

In terms of feasibility, I don't see much of a problem. Okay let me say that in a better way, I don't see any problem at all!
Train reservations can be made in advance for Shinkansen and limited express trains. It is not necessary but something I would recommend, it just gives you this extra peace of mind that you don't have to stand for the entire journey.
For local trains (such as within Tokyo) just show your JR Pass and hop on.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel-San,

Thank you very much for your reply!

What is the best way for me to get from Nara back to Tokyo using my JR pass? How long will this take me?

What is this best way for me to look these timetables up? I tried hyperdia but I don't know which of all the transportoptions is covered by my JRpass.

Kind regards, Kristel

Hello Kristel,

Have a look at our blog post of how to plan with your JR Pass.

I've looked up the route for you:
Nara - Tokyo all parameters are set correctly, so feel free to adjust the date and time to your own liking.

Hope this helps!
