I am traveling to Kyoto from Kansai Airport staying for 3 nights . Then onto Osaka for 2 nights before leaving in the evening for home.
Beside the usual tourist sightseeing in both cities, we are venturing maybe to Kobe or Mara for a day trip .
Is it better to get a jr pass or just pay as you go?

Hello there,
All your travel is within the Kansai Area. You could look at using a Kansai Area Pass for travel around here.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
