Narita, Tokyo, Iiyama return

Hi there,
We are 8 people, 4 adults and 4 children ages 7 to 14. Arriving in Japan on Monday for 2 weeks. Are we better to purchase 14 day or 7 day JR passes or individual tickets as we need them? An instant quote is worryingly expensive. Our itinerary is 2 days Tokyo, 7 days Iiyama, remaining days sight seeing return to Narita for departure.
We have not purchased vouchers for exchange, is this a problem or can we buy the passes/tickets on arrival in Japan?
Kind regards,
Phoebe

Hello Phoebe,

I read your itinerary and think it is best to buy normal rail tickets for your trip. A one way Tokyo - Iiyama is ¥ 8,430. You'd have an include a bit more travel, like a trip to Kyoto or Nagoya for a JR Pass to he cost effective here.

We have a great tool that you can use to find ticket prices and compare it against the cost of a JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
