Nagano Snowboarding and Kyoto

Hi,

We are 2 weeks in Japan. Visiting a relative (expat) in Nagano and touring a little. Our plans are so far:

2.3. Arrive Tokyo, Narita and transfer to Nagano
4.3. Go to the mountains, 2-3 day Snowboarding and see monkeys, maybe Shiga Kogen?
8.3. Go to Kyoto
11.3. Go to Osaka
13.3. Go to Hiroshima
15.3. Go back to Tokyo
16.3. Fly back from Narita

  1. Would a 14 day Pass make sense?
  2. Any suggestion for a couple nice and easy reachable days in the snow near Nagano? Monkeys and Thermal Bath would be great :-)
  3. Is the JR Pass valid to go to Shiga Kogen?
  4. I could not see, if the JR Pass is valid for someone with a foreign passport but with a 2 year work visa?
  5. Any special suggestion for this time of the year?

Sorry for too simple questions.
Thanks a lot in advance

Katja

Hi Katja,

Making use of a JR Pass would help you make some good savings, here's a list of normal ticket prices:

Narita Airport - Nagano ¥ 10,680
Nagano - Kyoto ¥ 10,630
Kyoto - Osaka ¥ 540
Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 9,950
Hiroshima - Tokyo ¥ 18,050
Tokyo - Narita Airport ¥ 2,940

For a total of ¥ 52,790 or ¥ 7,690 in savings as the 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 45,100. This JR Pass is also valid for local travel around Osaka and Tokyo on the JR and to answer your 1st question: Yes a JR Pass would make sense :)

2.) Visiting the Snow Monkey Park (jigokudani) is a great visit, an other nice visit in the area is Nozawa Onsen which is both a winter sport resort and Onsen town.

3.) You can use to JR Pass for travel up to Nagano station, where there express buses leave for Shiga Kogen, it is also possible to use a private railway to Yudanaka and take a bus from there but neither option is covered by the JR Pass.

4.) The JR Pass can only be used by visitors entering Japan under a 90 day tourist visa.

5.) Enjoy the snow and maybe a visit to Takayama and Shirakawago if you have the time.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

thank you so much for your advice! And sorry for the late reply, I was offline for a while.

Cheers
