Hi, we are a family of 4 people and we will spend our holidays in Japan from the 4th till the 21st of August. Our itinerary would be as follow:
Milan-Tokyo 4
Tokyo 5-6-7
Tokyo - Kinosaki onsen 8
Kinosaki 9
Kinosaki - Osaka 10
Osaka - Koya-san 11
Koya-san - Hiroshima 12
Hiroshima, Miyajima 13
Hiroshima - Kyoto 14
Kyoto 15-16-17-18
Kyoto - Tokyo 19
Tokyo 20-21
I have some questions:
- do you think it's a good itinerary? for the time being we have just bought the flights to and from Japan so everything else could be changed -do we need to buy JRP for 14 days? -is it possible to reach Kinosaki onsen from Tokyo directly? - is it true that it's not possible to bring suitcases on the trains? Thank you very much for your kind attention

Hi there,

First let me say that I love your itinerary. Visiting Kinosaki onsen, Hiroshima and Miyajima on top of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka makes for a wonderful trip. Using a 14 day JR Pass is something that I would certainly recommend, you would make very good savings over normal ticket prices and you just need one ticket for all your travel.

Now let's have a look at the details. Reaching Kinosaki Onsen is done via a transfer at Kyoto station. Basically you travel from Tokyo - Kyoto - Kinosaki Onsen. With this in mind it may be nice to visit Kyoto first and Kinosaki after, this way you can spread your travel time better. If you do this, than I would also suggest visiting Osaka after Hiroshima. This because it is directly between Hiroshima and Tokyo and makes for a good stop in between.

JR Trains are all equipped to bring luggage aboard, however there are certain restrictions. As a general rule you can bring one suitcase per person and hand luggage too. However this is not strictly enforced and it is okay to bring more if trains are not crowded.

For the rest, I think that your itinerary looks great and I don't have much else to add to it.

Enjoy Japan!
Daniel

Daniel,
first of all THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH for your answer.
You are right, it would be better to stop in Kyoto on our way from Tokyo to Kinosaki but we would like to visit Kyoto during the Daimon-ji Yaki, that I read on my guide it's on the 16th of August. Can you confirm me this date? do you agree with me that it's worth to enjoy this special moment in Kyoto? Once we buy our JRP, we cannot make reservation from Italy, can we? we can make reservation for the train only when we are in Japan, is it true? my last question about the suitcases: one trolley and one backpack each should be ok? how we know if on the train there is enough space or not in advance, so that we to avoid problem at the time of every departure?
THANK YOU AGAIN for your kindness
