JR pass worth it and what to do in Tokyo & Kyoto

Hi,

My partner and I arrive in Tokyo next Friday for 3 nights then to Kyoto for 3 nights then to Osaka to catch a flight to Sapporo for a couple of nights before heading to Nesiko and on to Furano.

As we plan to stay in and around Tokyo during our 3 days we are not sure if its worth getting a JR pass. We plan on taking the bullet train to Kyoto and then onto Osaka a few days later. Can you confirm what our best option is? And are there any day trips from Tokyo we should consider?

I also understand the Festival of Lights is on while we are there. Is this easy to get to and is it worth going? Are you also able to reccomend a really good restuarant in Tokyo for a celebration dinner. I hear everywhere is great but we are looking for somewhere extra special.

If you are also able to make a reccomendation in Sapporo and Nesiko for dinner would be great. We will be in Neisko for Christmas day.

Any other suggestions of what not to miss in any of the places I have mentioned would also be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Lana

Hi Lana,

I get the impression from what I read that you plan to visit Japan as a special occasion. Japan is always special, so it's a great choice :)

As for the JR Pass, I think that you would be better of buying normal tickets as a one way ticket Tokyo - Kyoto is not enough to cover the cost of a 7 day JR Pass. One day trip I would recommend making from Tokyo would either be a visit to Nikko or Yokohama, especially a walk around the harbour area is very beautiful.

I am not sure which festival you mean, do you mean around Tokyo or Hokkaido? Something I certainly can recommend is the Kobe Liminarie which takes place every December and is very beautiful.

About a special dinner in Tokyo, I don't have a specific recommendation. What you could do is enjoy a dinner in one of the Sky restaurants and look out on the Skyline Tokyo. Some have a rotating floor so you get a 360 degree view of the city!

I hope this helps!
Daniel
