Best use of a 2 week pass?

My travel companion an I will be arriving in Narita on May 19th.
On 5/22 we leave Tokyo for Atami where we will be staying overnight.
On 5/23 we leave for Koyto. While staying in Kyoto we will be making a day trip to Nara.
We leave Kyoto back for Tokyo on 5/30.
We depart Narita on 6/2.

Because of our dates of travel, we would need to get a 14 day pass. Is this the best use of the pass, or would it be cheaper with individual fares?
Thank you!

Hi there,

A 14 day rail pass costs ¥45,100, so you'll need to spend more than that on individual tickets for a 14 day pass o be worthwhile. Lets take a look at your costs:

  1. Tokyo > Atami: ¥7310, (55mins, 136km)
  2. Atami > Kyoto: ¥11310, (150mins, 409km)
  3. Kyoto > Nara: ¥690, (44mins, 41km)
  4. Nara > Kyoto: ¥690, (48mins, 41km)
  5. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13420, (161mins, 513km)

TOTAL: ¥33420 for 5 legs

As you can see, the cost of individual tickets is ¥11,680 cheaper than a 14 day pass. Unless you can complete you trip within 7 days, or intend to do other JR travel during this period, I recommend purchasing separate tickets as needed.

Hope this helps!
