Starting in kitamatsudo, then to Himeji for 3-4 days, then to Kyoto (possibly via Osaka) (possibly also to Nara), and finally returning to Tokyo area. About 12 days total travel, mostly in Kyoto area. I don't think 14 day pass is worth it is it? Of course will see temples and onsen in Kyoto (Jidai and Kuruma matsuri), bamboo and cormorants near Arashiyama, Himeji castle and kenka festival in Himeji, Not interested in shopping or nightlife. Any suggestions of locations to add? Can I buy two different passes that would be cheaper than JR 14 day or individual tickets?

Hi there,

You are correct, with the current itinerary it would not pay off to purchase a 14 day JR Pass. However a 7 day JR Pass could be very useful if you can use it to return from Tokyo - Himeji in 7 days. If that does not work out, then you'd be best off purchasing normal tickets while traveling.

As for places to add, when reading your itinerary the first that comes to mind is Hikone comes to mind. It's a small historic town with a beautiful castle like Himeji but a lot less tourists visit it. You can also visit lake Biwa from there.

I also think Kobe may be of itinerary to you. It is not as busy as other major cities and there are tons of little attractions to visit. Read more here.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
