Using the JR Pass in Tokyo - 14 or 21 days?

Hi!

I'll be visiting Japan for 18 days in total and I was planning to stay the first few days in Tokyo (arriving at and leaving from Haneda airport, so starting in Tokyo anyway) and maybe some days after the trip through Japan as well.
Does it pay off to buy the 21 days pass or is there another - cheaper - way to travel around Tokyo the first few days and take the 14 days pass?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best regards
Audrey

Hi,
It depends on where you are going of course.
If you're only within any given city, you will get little value out of the pass. You could use it on the JR Yamanote Line, which goes to several popular tourist areas, but fares are not expensive. If you can complete your long distance travel within 14 days, that would give you more value.
You should make sure any pass at least breaks even for you. You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.
Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.

Good luck.
