I plan to travel from kansai airport to Himeji , Hiroshima and Miyajima . Do I need the JR rail pass , or is the JR West rail pass good enough?
Pass for JR west
Hi,
It's not a question of "needing" a rail pass - it's whether you save money with one.
If that is your full itinerary though, then the JR Pass would cost you more then you save. The JR Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass costs less than half and would suit your plans very well. It's also good for five consecutive days so you could add more places and get even more value from it. Himeji certainly has Japan's greatest castle (plus don't miss the Kokoen Garden next to it), and Hiroshima has some sights as well (Peace Park/Museum, castle, Shukkeien Garden, Okonomiyaki-mura, Mitakidera Temple, Mazda Museum), but Miyajima is one of the most popular places with one of Japan's famed Top 3 Views. If you want more to see and do, Iwakuni is close by and its iconic bridge is one of the most beautiful in Japan. Onomichi has it's temple tour and and one of Japan's wildest temples, Kosanji, plus Okayama has its own great places - Kurashiki, the Kibi Plain, and one of Japan's most beautiful traditional gardens, Korakuen. Don't ignore the furthest limits of the pass either - Takamatsu has some great places like the Ritsurin Garden, plus you could also explore the Kinosaki hot spring area and Wakayama.
Good Luck.
