Hi, can you please advise on our itinerary using a 7 day JR pass?

26-30 Oct in tokyo
30, 31 nov - free days
1 - 3 oct Kyoto
4 oct in Mt Koyasan
5,6 nov - Osaka/ Nara
7 nov fly out from Osaka

We are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children under 12). We thought we would get a 7 day rail pass for days 30 oct - 5th nov and then Kansai 2 day area pass for 6,7 Nov. Is this an economical way to cover our trip? Also, what should we do on days 30, 31 Oct? I would like to go to Yudanaka/ Shibu Onsen for 30th Oct but don't know the best/ quickest way to get to Kyoto stopping somewhere on 31st Oct en route. We would like to experience an onsen town and see some lovely scenery. Alternatively is it worth heading to Hiroshima/ Miyajima from Tokyo for 2 quick days? Any advice is appreciated.

Hi there,

This is a bit of a difficult one. A 7 day JR Pass could be useful depending on what you do on the 30-31st. However if you don't do a lot of travel on these days, then a 7 day JR Pass would not be economic. Traveling from Yudanaka directly to Kyoto would be to much I feel, it's a whopping 6-7 hours of non stop train travel. Here is an example route. Although a JR Pass would be useful if you did make the visit. An alternative could be to visit Hakone this is a very beautiful area at the feet of mount Fuji and there are some very beautiful onsen in the area.

Hiroshima/Miyajima is also a very nice alternative but it would also involve a good amount of travel if you are coming directly from Tokyo. Here is a reference route.

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi, thanks for your reply. Is it possible to stay overnight somewhere interesting between yudanaka and kyoto to break up the journey? Thanks

Hi there,

I guess you could stay in Hakone for the night. which is a very beautiful area and you can ride the Shinkansen from there to Kyoto (takes about 2 hours). An other alternative could be Tokyo or Nagoya.
