Xmas in Japan and the JR pass

Hi there, two families (6 adults, 4 kids) with luggage (lots) heading to Japan for 14 days. Flying into Narita airport then into Tokyo for 5 days then Hukuba for 9 days skiing then straight back to Narita airport. Will be doing Disney and the Tokyo district but need to know whether 7 or 14 day JR pass will be worth it considering we are on the snow for 9 days? Was thinking of using 7 day pass to get into Tokyo and to Hukuba then buy a day pass for the Hukuba - Narita airport trip. Any thoughts?

Also, how do we purchase the JR pass considering we leave Aus on the 30/12?

Hi there!

Judging from your plan I think the best option would be to pay for tickets as you travel. The JR Pass would not help you make savings when you use it to travel to or from Hakuba. A normal ticket using limited express trains is about 8,000yen.

For your arrival at Narita Airport consider a Suica + Narita Express package. This is a pretty good deal since you get a discounted ticket for the Narita Express, as well as a Suica card, which is a prepaid travel card which make travel around Tokyo very easy. The Narita Express also has a special compartment of luggage at each station.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
