Hi there

Tokyo - Shin Osaka ¥ 13,750
Shin Osaka - Kyoto (return) ¥ 1,040
Shin Osaka - Takayama ¥ 10,310
Takayama - Odawara ¥ 12,410
Odawara - Haneda Airport ¥ 3,600

For a total of ¥ 41,110 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 and would certainly pay off!

I hope this helps!

Hi,

I saw below replied from a JRPass Expert. whole trip cost ¥40920 and he recommend 7days JR Pass.

Tokyo to Takayama stopping at Matsumoto for a brief visit en route. We then plan to spend two days in Takayama before heading to Kyoto for several days. Would someone be kind enough to let me know the best way to proceed (or if this is even possible on JP).

Yes - this trip is very possible on the Japan rail pass. Here are the costs of the trip if you were to buy individual tickets, assuming you'll be returning to Tokyo:

Tokyo > Matsumoto: ¥6710, (170mins, 235km)
Matsumoto > Takayama: ¥11310, (304mins, 354km)
Takayama > Kyoto: ¥9680, (191mins, 314km)
Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13220, (161mins, 513km)
TOTAL: ¥40920 for 4 legs

If your plans fit this itinerary I would certainly recommend a 7 day rail pass (¥28,300) over buying individual tickets.

You can look up train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for Japan Rail Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Hi again!

The JR Pass would cover all of the above travel. So you would not have to pay anything extra.
In other words normal tickets would cost you ¥ 41,110 with the 7 day JR Pass (¥ 28,300) you would thus save ¥ 12,810 over regular tickets.

PS: I think that you are referring to Mari's great post here.

I hope this clears things up!

Hi Again!

Yes seat reservations are free with the JR Pass. Just go to a JR ticket office and tell the staff where you wish to go.

You can always take a non-reserved seat if you miss your train or ask the JR Staff to make a new reservation. Most of the time this is not a problem at all.
