Hello,
We are visiting Japan in April for 2 weeks and plan to do the following:
Day 1: Narita to Shinjuku
Day 2: Shinjuku to Hiroshima
Day 3: Hiroshima to Miyajima and back(day Trip)
Day 5: Hiroshima to Koyasan
Day 6: Koyasan to Kyoto
Day 7: in Kyoto
Day 8: in Kyoto
Day9: Kyoto to Hakone
Day 10: in Hakone
Day 11: Hakone to Tokyo
DAy 12: in Tokyo
Day 13: In Tokyo
Day 14: Tokyo to Narita

I was wondering if it is worth it to buy a 14 day jrpass or whether it would be easier to just take trains as available. I have tried to look up the train prices but the difference is just marginal. We just do not want to waste time buying tickets last minute and running around the stations with our luggage as this would be my wife's first visit to Japan.

Thankyou so much for your help.(in advance)
Regards
Adarsh

Hi Adarsh,

Here is a cost breakdown for you:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Shinjuku(jr): ¥3,310 (84mins, 89km)
  2. Shinjuku(jr) > Hiroshima: ¥17,850 (317mins, 898km)
  3. Hiroshima > Miyajimaguchi: ¥400 (26mins, 21km)
  4. Miyajimaguchi > Hiroshima: ¥400 (26mins, 21km)
  5. Hiroshima > Osaka: ¥10,220 (109mins, 345km)
  6. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540 (28mins, 42km)
  7. Kyoto > Odawara: ¥11,550 (160mins, 429km)
  8. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥3,440 (35mins, 83km)
  9. Tokyo > Narita airport terminal 1: ¥3,140 (58mins, 79km)

JR ticket cost: ¥50,850 for 9 legs

As you can see you'll make good savings with the 14 day pass, retain flexibility and will also not have to worry about purchasing JR tickets as you travel so I think I can recommend the 14 day pass to you. You will also be able to make good use of the JR Pass in Tokyo - here's a map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference

Please note that for Koyasan the JR Pass will get you to Osaka. From here you should use the non-JR Nankai rail up to Koyasan. Also, for Hakone the JR Pass will get you to Odawara. From here you should use the non-JR Odakyu lines upto Hakone. I recommend the Hakone Free Pass for this.

Hope this helps!

Dear Mari,

Thank you very much for your reply. It was very informative and helpful. I think I will then go in for the 14 day pass. and buy the Hakone free pass also.

Adarsh
