What type of pass should I get? 7 or 14 day? Green or Ordinary?

We are traveling throughout Japan in 10 days but I am not sure what type of pass I should get...should I get the 7 day pass since most of my more expensive trips are within 7 days or should I get the 14 day pass. Should I splurge and get the green car pass? I'm not sure which trains would even have green cars available to make it worth it.

Day 1 - Tokyo to Hiroshima, then Hiroshima to Miyajima
Day 2 - Miyajima to Osaka
Day 3 - Osaka
Day 4 - Osaka to Mount Koyasan
Day 5 - Mount Koyasan to Kyoto
Day 6 - Kyoto
Day 7 - Kyoto
Day 8 - Kyoto
Day 9 - Kyoto to Atami
Day 10 - Atami to Tokyo

I know the first trip to Hiroshima will likely be the longest trip so that is why I was considering the green car pass. Would it even be available? Should I just get the ordinary rail pass and just pay extra for the green car for this portion?

Any advise would be appreciated!

Thank you

Hi there,

I looked at available options for you and do think that a 14 day JR Pass would be the way to go. The difference in price between the 7 and 14 day JR Pass is 16,800yen - so you would have to make at least this amount in travel for the upgrade to be worth it.

Currently you would do the following after day 7,
Kyoto - Atami ¥ 11,540
Atami - Tokyo ¥ 4,080

This adds up to ¥ 15,620 so you are very close - the JR Pass can also be used for travel to and from the Airport and locally in Tokyo so it would be easy to make savings with it.

Green carriages run all along the route Tokyo - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Tokyo but the Shinkansen is already very good in Ordinary class. Since your overall travel is limited I would suggest sticking to a normal JR Pass.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
