Hi ( We are family of 4) travelling to Japan from Dec 15 to Dec 22.
Cities that we are visiting :- i) Osaka, ii) Kobe iii) Kyoto iv) Nara v) Nagoya vi) Takayama
Q1) What pass should we purchase? Kansai wide or Kansai
Q2) When we are at these cities, can the JR pass be used to travel within the city? Or we need to purchase the local train pass?
Q3) How do we utilize the JR pass to travel from either Osaka or Nagoya toTakayama?

TQ

Hi TQ,

Welcome to the forum, let's have a look at your questions.

1.) Before I can find the right pass for you could you tell me what you plan to do after Takayama? This will help me find the best option.

2.) Yes the JR Pass can be used for local travel on JR lines in these cities. Other transport such as the metro will require normal tickets.

3.) You can get a ticket by just showing your JR Pass. The Staff will then find the best route for you. The JR Pass covers the entire route between Osaka - Tayayama, including the Shinkansen to Nagoya,

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thks Daniel for your prompt reply.

We will be back from Takayama to Osaka on the 22 Dec and will be flying back home from Kansai.
If we want to use the subway lines, what type of pass do we need to purchase ?

Btw can you explain what is this ICOCA pass? Is it more convenient for us to purchase this card for local travel within the cities?

Do we have to buy individual ICOCA cards for each of the cities we want to visit?

Hi TQ,

ICOCA card basically is a prepaid travel card. You put money on it, then you swipe it over the ticket gate when you enter and exit the station. This makes for easy travel, since you don't have to purchase a ticket (and figure out he fare) each time you travel. The ICOCA card is usable on the Subway and I would recommend using it to travel around.

The ICOCA card can be used nationwide so one (per person) is enough.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
