Using JR Pass during the May holidays

My family and I will travel to Tokyo on May 1, 2014 and plan to exchange our vouchers for JR Passes (non-reserved travel) in Narita Airport. Then we intend to travel the next day, May 2, to Kyoto via shinkansen. As it is a holiday week, do you think it will be difficult to get a non-reserved seat on the Hikari train to Kyoto?

Hi Mariles,

I don't think that you should have much of a problem getting tickets if you reserve them a day in advance. The only thing that I am wondering about is why you write (non-reserved travel). The JR Pass allows for free seat reservations and this would be the ideal way to secure seating in advance.

If you want to just a non reserved seat. Just hop on the train and show your pass as ticket.

Oh ok, I misunderstood that part about the JR pass allowing for free seat reservation. It will be no problem then. Thank you!
