questions & answers: using the japan rail pass

trip in mid-april 2016

Trip in mid-April 2016

Family of seven arriving Narita Airport at 9pm and will be staying in Japan for 12 days
Wish to cover the following places :

4/1 Arriving @ 9pm in Narita Airport
4/2 Tokyo
4/3 Mt Fuji (from Tokyo to Mt Fuji)
4/4 to 4/6 Kyoto (traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto)
4/7 to 4/9 Osaka (traveling from Kyoto to Osaka)
4/10 Back to Tokyo (traveling from Osaka back to Tokyo)
4/11 Tokyo
4/12 Flight departs @ 4pm

  1. Should I buy the 7 days or 14 days National JR Pass?
  2. I will be arriving late (9pm) at Narita airport. What transportation will be available to Shinjuku?
  3. Should I buy a separate pass to cover the transportation to/from the airport?

Hello there,

1.) I would stick with a 7 day JR Pass and use it for travel from 4/4 to 10/4. This way you can make the best use of your JR Pass and cover all Shinkansen (bullet train) travel.

2.) Late arrivals are always a bit of a problem in Japan, partly because its still quite a long trip from Narita Airport to Shinjuku. It is possible to use local services to travel to Shinjuku at this hour here is an example itinerary.

3.) It would make sense to buy normal tickets to and from the airport since you will arrive late and the Narita Express no longer runs at that hour.

Hope this helps,

Hello Daniel san,

This is very helpful.
Can I take the limousine bus from Narita airport around 10pm to Shinjuku?
What is the last departure time for the limousine bus from the airport ? and do I have to buy tickets in advance?

Thank You.

- Christine

Hi Christine,

Yes, I think the Airport limousine runs until midnight. You can buy a ticket at Narita Airport.

Hope this helps too!

Hi Daniel-san

For the JR pass, does it cover all the metro/(subways) and buses in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto?

If I purchase the pass online, how long does it take for delivery?

Thank you.
