Travel in Tokyo and to Osaka/Kyoto

Hi. My question is similar to Bluebecky's.

My wife and I are spending two weeks in Japan in Feb. Our first 9 days will be spent in Tokyo where on the first day we will need to get a train from Tokyo Narita Airport to Tokyo Dome area. Our major travel will be in the last week when we will travel:

Tokyo > Osaka

Osaka > Kyoto

Kyoto > Tokyo Narita Airport

We want to use the bullet train for the longer journeys. I see that you do a one week pass which would cost the two of us £330.00 and would presumably cover the three above journeys. Are we better getting the JR pass, booking single tickets in advance or buying tickets from the railway stations on the days of departure?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi Craig,

I would suggest buying a 7 Day JR Pass for your travel to Osaka, Kyoto and back to Narita Airport and supplement it with normal tickets for your first days in Tokyo.

With the 7 day JR Pass you could at least make the following savings:

Tokyo - Osaka ¥ 13,550
Osaka - Kyoto ¥ 540
Kyoto - Narita Airport ¥ 15,530

For a total of ¥ 29,620 the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 28,300 so you could save at least ¥ 1,320, I know this is only a start but you can also use the JR Pass for the local JR train network in Osaka which covers most of the city, adding more to your savings. Also remember that with the JR Pass you just need one ticket for your travels.

For your arrival at Narita Airport, consider buying a [Suica + NE'X] for your arrival. This will give you a discounted ticket on the Narita Express to Tokyo and a Suica card which you can use for local travel around the metropolis. It's a great way to get you started!

I hope this helps!
Daniel
