Travel from Narita Airport to Hakone

Hi !

I need to get some advice on travel from Narita to Hakone.

We will be arriving in Narita at 7:35 on Sunday 5th April and are willing to be in Hakone as soon as possible.
We'll be there from Sunday till Tuesday noon. From there, we'll travel to Kyoto.
We will have a JR Pass and will purchase the Hakone pass as well.

I feel there are a lot of possibilities but don't succeed to understand what is the right way/right price.
I'm not sure as well if it's worthy to take the Romancecar.

What do you suggest?

Thank you for taking time to help.

Best Regards
Mag

Hi Mag,

I would advise taking this route if you have a JR Pass. Take the Narita Express to Tokyo station and from there the Shinkansen to Odawara station. This is by far the most convenient route and also covered by the JR Pass.

The Romance car is a very nice ride but I am not sure if it is worth the extra fare if you already have a JR Pass.

Let me know if I can assist with anything else.

Daniel, hello

I have a few questions:
Based on the fact that I will have a JR pass:

  1. According to Hyperdia, I have 2 possibilities to reach Odawara from Narita International Airport using Narita Express: via Tokyo or via Shinagawa (seems that transfer is easier than via Tokyo). What do you think?

  2. Do I need to reserve seats on Narita Express or/and Shinkansen Kodama (between Tokyo/Shinagawa and Odawara)?

  3. I need to travel from Takayama to Gora. What is the best way. I mean by "Best" a convenient way, even if there are extra costs.

Thank you very much for your help,

Mag

Hi Mag,

1.) Both options are almost the same. It depends on what time it is which one works best. When you are at Narita Airport, just ask for tickets to Odawara. The JR Staff will then find the best route for you.

2.) Yes the Narita Express is reserved seat only. You could take a non-reserved seat on the Kodama but I would just get tickets for both when buying the tickets.

3.) I think that you may already have found the route on Hyperidia, it looks something like this. Unfortunately this really is not an easy route by rail. I think your best alternative would be rent a car if you don't feel much for making the route.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
