Hi, this is my first time posting here for my first Japan trip. I plan to travel from Nagoya to Tokyo with stopover in Hakone and Shizuoka, here’s my rough plan for the journey.

Day 1 Enter from Nagoya airport
Day 2 Takayama
Day 3 Nagoya city
Day 4 Shizuoka / Odawara / Hakone
Day 5 Shizuoka / Odawara / Hakone
Day 6 Tokyo
Day 7 Tokyo
Day 8 Flying back from Haneda airport

Is smooth transit between destinations possible for this arrangement? And is it better and more affordable to purchase JR pass than buying individual pass / tickets?

Kindly comment or suggest. Thanks 

Hi there!

That is the most efficient route. Basically you make a side trip to Takayama and from there travel straight to Tokyo, be it with a couple of nice stops on the way.

I checked ticket prices for you, here's a quick breakdown.
Nagoya - Takayama ¥ 6,070
Takayama - Nagoya ¥ 6,070
Nagoya - Shizuoka ¥ 6,380
Shizuoka - Odawara ¥ 4,010
Odawara - Tokyo ¥ 3,840

Although close in price, right now it would be better to buy normal tickets as you travel. You a JR Pass would pay of if you did about 3,000yen worth of travel.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel, thanks for your reply! I supposed you mean a JR pass would pay off if I do more than 30,000 yen worth of travel, right?

Also, I just came across this thing called Hakone visitor pass, would it be more economical if I head straight to Tokyo after Nagoya / Takayama and then from there travel to Hakone?

Any advice or suggestion would be much appreciated :)

Basically yes, the 7 day JR Pass is 28,300 yen, anything above that is basically what you save.
Yes traveling from Nagoya - Tokyo would cost ¥ 10,780. Saving quite a bit of money on all the stopovers.

The Hakone Free Pass generally offers good value if you want to explore the Hakone region. As it covers all kinds of travel within the Hakone area.

Hope this helps too!

Hi Daniel-san, thank you for your feedback! I've become clear of what choices to make now!

Besides train, I wonder is bus traveling a good choice? What are the pros and cons for travelers, for example, beautiful sight on the road or much slower / less convenient than the train?

Your reply would be helpful and much appreciated, thanks!

Hi Again,

Buses to where exactly? There's quite a big difference for instance between local buses and express buses. Generally I would not recommend traveling by bus as most bus companies only have Japanese speaking staff / support / websites making it pretty hard to get around if you don't have someone to help you.

In general trains are much faster (there's no bus with a top speed of 330km/h) the advantage about the bus is that they generally offer lower fares and reach some places where there are no trains.
